Matt Mitchell Jr. is the son of former Cebu Gems Matt Mitchell Sr. He is a 6-foot-6, 225-pound wing and will play for the San Diego State University this season.

Mitchell Jr. initially signed a letter of intent with Cal State Fullerton, then secured his release last spring and reopened his recruitment following a big senior season. He used his two remaining official visits on SDSU and Utah, and numerous other suitors emerged after seeing him with the powerful Dream Vision club: Oregon, USC, LSU, North Carolina State, UNLV, West Virginia, Gonzaga, Connecticut.

Other schools were interested but didn’t have any scholarships available so late, and some may have been deterred by the uncertainty over his eligibility for the 2017-18 season. Mitchell did not meet NCAA academic qualifications upon graduation in June but took a pair of classes over the summer and is expected to receive clearance for 2017-18.
